Description

The sculptural remnant of a spectacular plant — Giant Fennel (Ferula communis Gigantea') — native to the sunny, dry open areas of the Mediterranean basin and often grown as an impressive border plant at Great Dixter (England), among other world-renowned gardens. Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, the plant produces towering branching inflorescences (6-10' tall) from feathery foliar masses in early summer. These yield enormous canary-yellow compound umbels, which go to seed and then disperse by summer's end, as the plant lignifies into a woody, rigid, skeletal form. Straw-coloured throughout. Interestingly, used as a measuring device by the Romans thanks to the strong, even divisions of leaf axels on stems. Resembling bamboo, stems are hollow and surprisingly lightweight! Dramatic and unusual. Available as a trio (i.e., three stems to a bunch). Display en masse in a broad, deep, weighted vessel such as ourBig Scroll-Handled Vase. Dramatic and unusual. Wrapped in a kraft-sleeve for protection.
