DESCRIPTION
Part of a growing body of work that explores the aesthetics and utility of handled vessels, while referring to an extensive lineage of precedents from ancient Greece to the Art Nouveau movement to Modernist Sculpture and beyond.
A large, oval-mouthed vase whose tall cylindrical body bears symmetrical sloping arms that coil inwards into unexpected and delicate points. A hulking figure with a commanding or vulnerable aspect, depending on the view. Mottled sand, cream and olive-grey throughout, with brown speckles. Ash collected by the artist's family from their property has been added to the glazing; once fired, it burns into soft, pinky streaks on the neck, body, base and scroll handles. A strange and truly breath-taking piece. One of a kind and handmade by Clam Lab. Wheel-thrown stoneware with hand-built features. Matte to semi-matte finish. Not watertight, suitable for dried floral displays.

DESIGNER
Clam Lab is the ceramics practice of artist Clair Catillaz, based in Catskill, New York, USA. Catillaz creates tactile, functional vessels of other-worldly beauty. They reflect a profound understanding of materials and ceramic history — drawing from the aesthetic of Wabi Sabi and Japanese ceramics, Scandinavian design and the American studio pottery movement, among others. Her latest collection contains some of her largest and most ambitious artworks to date. All are intended for everyday enjoyment and use.
