Description

A remarkable collector's specimen — and one of the most visually complex available in the genus. Native to the arid regions of South America. The monstruosa form is the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation — one that replaces Cereus' characteristic straight columns with an irregular, undulating, wholly sculptural stem structure Thevariegata form adds a further layer of rarity: the stems are richly variegated in yellow, with short reddish spines and areoles filled with white wool. No two plants are identical. Stems are grey-blue to grey-green, deeply sculptural and multi-branched, forming a candelabra-like silhouette over time. In the wild, the standard species can reach up to 15 feet; indoors, growth is considerably slower and more compact. From June to September, large, fragrant whitish-pink flowers open in the evening and remain open into the following day. If pollinated, the resulting fruit is similar in structure and flavour to dragon fruit — juicy, filled with tiny edible black seeds. Potted in a one of our Flora Planter 14 cm / 5" from Bergs Potter.
