Description

A frothy, trailing, easy-care evergreen perennial — and, despite its moniker, not a true fern at all. Native to the rocky slopes and coastal scrub of South Africa. Popularized in Europe by German botanist Carl Ludwig Sprenger, whose name it bears. Sprenger's Asparagus (Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri') features numerous semi-stiff, arching stems that reach up to 24", densely covered in needle-like bright green cladophylls — modified stem segments that function as leaves. The effect is soft, feathery and full. Mature plants reach 1–2' tall and 3–4' wide. Stems bear small thorns; handle with care. Small, fragrant white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, followed by ornamental red berries in autumn. Thrives in bright indirect to filtered light. Direct afternoon sun may cause the foliage to yellow. Insufficient light or allowing the soil to dry out completely will also cause yellowing and leaf drop. Best displayed on a shelf, pedestal or elevated surface. Best suited to a small tabletop planter by Bergs Potter.
