DESCRIPTION
Part of a growing body of work that explores the aesthetics and utility of handled vessels. Scrolled and winged forms feature prominently, referencing an extensive lineage from ancient Greece to the Art Nouveau movement to Modernist Sculpture and beyond.
A vase with an especially inventive form. Cylindrical base transitions into a broad oval bowl with outwardly and downwardly curving extensions on either side. These resemble wings. They also add dynamism and delineate negative space, bestowing it with an architectural quality. Painterly surface and interior — all drips, daubs, splashes and smears of glazing in soft peachy pink, cream, dove-grey and amber. Bears the occasional beauty mark, too. One of a kind and handmade by Clam Lab. Wheel-thrown stoneware with hand-built features. Eggshell finish. Watertight.

DESIGNER
Clam Lab is the ceramics practice of artist Clair Catillaz, based in Catskill, New York, USA. Catillaz creates tactile, functional vessels of other-worldly beauty. They reflect a profound understanding of materials and ceramic history — drawing from the aesthetic of Wabi Sabi and Japanese ceramics, Scandinavian design and the American studio pottery movement, among others. Each piece features high-quality stoneware, masterful glaze customization and application, a sophisticated firing process, and a skillful integration of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Her latest collection contains some of her largest and most ambitious artworks to date. All are intended for everyday enjoyment and use.
Made by hand. Due to differences in/among monitors, actual colours may vary from those appearing on screen. Lift before moving to avoid surface marks.
