Description
The impressive, human-sized inflorescence of a palm tree native to Suriname, commonly called Big Palulu (Phenakospermum guyannense), and a close relative of the Madagascar Palm. Mature plants achieve heights of 30' or more, producing a spectacular fan-shaped, planar formation of large, banana-like leaves; from these, emerge large, upright inflorescences with white petals, which eventually bear fruit. Stems are tall and dense — up to 4" in diameter — and punctuated by long, ribbed, paddle-like bracts with clusters of woody, three-lobed seed-pods. Once packed with seeds, pod interiors are split wide-open to reveal fascinating chiseled surfaces. With occasional traces of inky black seeds and brilliant orange aril (a fuzzy pulp). Chalky, earthy surface contrasts with polished, amber pod interiors. A standalone, showy botanical for informal display strewn on a long table/shelf, or, leaning or mounted on a wall. For added drama, install in a big, weighted vase directly on the floor or elevated on a low pedestal. Wrapped in a kraft sleeve for protection.
