Description

A striking, delphinium-like inflorescence of the Babassu Palm (Attalea speciosa). The plant grows wild in Brazil and parts of Guyana, Bolivia and Suriname, but it is also cultivated in the Caribbean and Florida, USA. It is distinguished by a long, reedy trunk, feathery foliage, and striking pendulous inflorescences; these produce dense colonies of hard-shelled nuts whose kernels are the source of babassu oil — a coconut oil equivalent — widely used across culinary, cosmetic, lubricant and fuel industries. Botanical features flattened, knobby stalks and an extensive colony of hollow, rounded bracts that once housed nuts; these are composed of irregular, overlapping and papery parts. Very interesting but top-heavy! Best installed on its side as a standalone object, as a dynamic head-to-toe group against a support, or en masse in a broad, deep and weighted vase directly on the floor or elevated on a support. Wrapped with hydration in a kraft-sleeve for protection.
