DESCRIPTION
Part of an ongoing series reimagining ancient "Venus" figures.
A small, human-shaped vase with a flat-bottom. Composed of intersecting ovoidal and spherical volumes. Fired in a 14' anagama kiln at The Oki Doki Studio in Germantown, NY, USA. A team of 8 — Catillaz among them, worked in shifts over 6 days to stoke the wood-fire kiln with locally-sourced lumber. Lustrous colouring and finish achieved without glaze and through wood-firing process only. (Clay type, scale and shape of work, placement within kiln, lumber type, firing temperature and cooling method also contribute to the unique appearance of each piece.) One of a kind and handmade by Clam Lab. Wheel-thrown stoneware with hand-built features. Semi-gloss finish. Not watertight and suitable for dried floral displays.

DESIGNER
Clam Lab is the ceramics practice of artist Clair Catillaz, based in Catskill, New York, USA. Catillaz creates tactile, functional vessels of other-worldly beauty. They reflect a profound understanding of materials and ceramic history — drawing from the aesthetic of Wabi Sabi and Japanese ceramics, Scandinavian design and the American studio pottery movement, among others. Each piece features high-quality stoneware, masterful glaze customization and application, a sophisticated firing process, and a skillful integration of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Her latest collection contains some of her largest and most ambitious artworks to date. All are intended for everyday enjoyment and use.
