Stapelia

Stapelia

Varieties

Stapelia hirsuta

Origin

Native to the arid regions of South Africa.

General Care

Light

Prefers bright, filtered light to full sun. Tolerates some direct sunlight, especially in cooler climates. Protect from harsh midday sun to prevent scorching.

Temperature

15-24°C. Keep above 10°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Humidity

Low to average. Thrives in dry conditions and does not require additional humidity. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring-summer), water every 2-3 weeks. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less, as the plant enters dormancy. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot; always check soil moisture before watering. Ensure good soil drainage.

Fertilize

Feed once a month during the growing season (spring-summer) with a balanced, organic succulent/cacti fertilizer, following package instructions. Avoid fertilizing in winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Maintenance

Rotate the plant occasionally to promote even growth. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. Prune as needed to maintain shape and remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Support large, heavy leaves with stakes if necessary.

Potting and Repotting

Use a well-draining succulent and cacti potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, moving to a pot that is 1-2" larger in diameter and depth. For larger plants, consider top-dressing with fresh potting mix annually instead of repotting.

Special Points/Common Problems
  • Overwatering is the most common issue, leading to soft, mushy stems or root rot.
  • Yellowing or shriveled stems can indicate underwatering or too much direct sunlight.
  • Regularly check for pests such as spider mites, which can be a common problem in dry conditions.
