General Care

Light

Bright, indirect to direct. Tolerates some low light but will etiolate — producing sparse, elongated growth — without sufficient brightness. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.

Temperature

18–24°C. Keep above 10°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity

Low. Tolerates dry indoor air well.

Water

Every 2–3 weeks (spring–fall). Water thoroughly and allow substrate to dry fully before watering again. Every 3–4 weeks (winter). Reduce watering significantly; allow substrate to remain dry for extended periods. Always check moisture level before watering.Aerate mix to improve its condition.

Fertilizer

Every 4 weeks (spring–fall). Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer, according to packaging instructions. Do not fertilize in winter.

Maintenance

Every 1-2 weeks, rotate plant to ensure even growth. Handle as little as possible; leaves detach at the lightest touch. Fallen leaves may be laid on the surface of the substrate to propagate new plants. Remove any shrivelled or spent leaves carefully. Inspect for pests periodically.

Potting and Repotting

Soil-based potting mix. Transplant once pot-bound. Every 2–3 years (spring), move plant into a planter 1–2" larger (diameter); or repot in the same planter using fresh substrate after cleaning planter and lightly trimming roots. Top dress annually once maximum convenient planter size is reached.

Special Points/Common Problems:

  • Soft, shrivelled leaves typically indicate under-watering; mushy or translucent leaves suggest overwatering and possible root rot.
  • Sparse, elongated or pale growth indicates insufficient light. Move to a brighter position gradually to avoid sun scorch.
  • Mature plants may produce small, rose-coloured, star-shaped flowers at the tips of vines in spring or summer under ideal conditions.
  • Propagate easily from individual leaves or stem cuttings placed on well-draining substrate.

  • Crinkly or brittle leaves may suggest poor humidity or exposure to direct sunlight. Adjust humidity, placement or window coverings accordingly.
