False Shamrock
Varieties
Oxalis tetragona / Oxalis vulcanicola
Origin
Native to the volcanic slopes of Central America (Costa Rica and Panama)
General Care
Light
Bright, indirect to some direct. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. Foliage colour deepens and intensifies under higher light conditions. Tolerates moderate light but flowering and colour will diminish without sufficient brightness.
Temperature
18–24°C. Keep above 10°C. Protect from frost and cold drafts. Tolerates warm indoor conditions well.
Humidity
Average. Tolerates typical indoor humidity without difficulty.
Water
Every 2–3 weeks (spring–fall). Water thoroughly and allow substrate to dry fully before watering again. Every 3–4 weeks (winter). Reduce watering during the plant's natural rest period. If foliage dies back entirely in winter, withhold water until new growth emerges in spring. Always check moisture level before watering. Always check moisture level before watering. Aerate mix to improve its condition.
Fertilizer
Every 2–4 weeks (spring–fall). Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer, according to packaging instructions. Do not fertilize in winter.
Maintenance
Rotate every 1–2 weeks to encourage even growth; foliage will orient strongly toward the light source. Remove spent flowers and yellowing or spent leaves at their base regularly. Cut back any leggy or untidy stems to encourage fresh, bushy growth.
Potting and Repotting
Soil-based potting mix. Transplant once pot-bound. Every 2–3 years (spring), move plant into a planter 1–2" larger (diameter); or repot in the same planter using fresh substrate after cleaning planter and lightly trimming roots. Top dress annually once maximum convenient planter size is reached.
Special Points/Common Problems:
- Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, poor drainage or natural leaf turnover.
- If foliage dies back in winter, this is a natural dormancy response. Reduce watering, keep the planter in a cool position and resume normal care once new growth emerges in spring.
- A period of winter cool (10–15°C) and reduced water lasting 6–8 weeks is essential to trigger flowering the following spring or summer. Without this rest period, plants may grow vigorously but fail to bloom.
- A fast grower under ideal conditions; trim back regularly to maintain a neat, full habit.
- Propagate easily by dividing tuberous roots in spring.
