Lepismium houlletianum / Lepismium houlletianum var. regnelli
Origin
Native to the tropical forests of eastern Brazil, where it grows as an epiphyte anchored to tree branches in humid, shaded canopy.
General Care
Light
Bright, indirect light. Tolerates gentle morning or late-afternoon sun; avoid intense midday exposure, which can scorch stems.
Temperature
16-26°C. Keep above 10°C.
Humidity
Average to higher — appreciates more humidity than a desert cactus. For extra humidity: mist occasionally, place pot on moist pebbles in a tray, group with other plants, or introduce a humidifier.
Water
Water when the top third of the soil is dry, spring through summer. Water more sparingly in fall and winter. Allow soil to dry partially between waterings — never let it dry out fully, unlike a desert cactus.
Fertilizer
Every 4-6 weeks during the growing season, using a diluted cactus or epiphyte-type fertilizer. Pause feeding in winter.
Maintenance
Every 1-2 weeks, rotate plant to ensure even growth. Periodically mist to clear accumulated dust and inspect for pests. Trim damaged or overly leggy stems with sterile shears.
Potting and Repotting
Light, airy orchid- or cactus-style mix with added bark and perlite, mimicking the loose organic matter it roots into naturally. Every 1-2 years (spring), move into a planter 1-2" larger, or refresh soil in the same planter.
Special Points/Common Problems:
- Wrinkling or limp stems may suggest underwatering.
- Yellowing or stem drop may suggest too much direct sun or overwatering.
- Stems may flush pink or red under stronger light.
- Given time and suitable conditions, stems trail well past 3-5'. Propagate by pressing a healthy stem cutting into a light, well-draining mix.
