Pet-friendly

General Care

Light

Medium to bright filtered. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves. 

Temperature

18 - 24°C. Protect from hot or cold drafts.

Humidity

Average to higher. For extra humidity: mist 1-2 times per week, group with other plants, or, introduce a humidifier.

Water

Every 1-2 weeks. Swirl and soak in tepid water for 10 minutes (smaller varieties) or 20 minutes (larger varieties). Gently shake to remove excess water. On a cloth or towel, carefully place upside down to drain and air-dry within 3 hours. 

Fertilize

Once a month (spring-fall). Use organic orchid or bromeliad fertilizer at half strength, according to package instructions.

Maintenance

Every 1-2 weeks, rotate plant to ensure even growth. Remove spent basal leaves. Trim dried tips to a point and trim unruly roots.

Potting and Repotting

Special Points/Common Problems: 

    • Brown or dried tips, soft or wrinkled leaves and an exaggerated concave plant shape often suggest underwatering.
    • A brown, black or mushy base, or, leaf drop often suggest rot from overwatering. 
    • Once in their lifetime, plants may flower and then, eventually fade. Flowers last for days or even months, and while flowering, plants produce offshoots or pups. Separate pups once they reach ½ of the size of their parent.
